Orma Oromo is a Southern Dialect of Oromo (Eastern Cushitic) spoken in the Tana River District of the Kenyan Coast Province, mainly along the Tana River itself, between Garissa and Garsen. The number of speakers is estimated to be about 69,000 people (www.ethnologue.org for 2006). The present dictionary was written by an author who has been dealing with and publishing on Oromo for many years. The volume is the result of several field trips in the years between 1978 and 1983. It consists of an Orma-English vocabulary – a revised version of the lexical materials in Stroomer’s previous study from 1987 – and an hitherto unpublished English-Orma wordlist. Apart from about 2,000 lexical items it contains numerous references to loanwords, derived forms and synonyms.
