This volume contains the lectures of the section Mission und Moderne (Mission and Modernity) held during the meeting of the Association of Africanists in Germany (VAD) and the 12th Afrikanistentag. The relationship of European colonialism and Christian mission is central to the contributions.
Written documents left by missionaries could be useful to different disciplines, particularly for historical studies and ethnology of Africa. Furthermore, they form a basis for the essays of this book. The essays deal mainly with southern Africa, but they are not limited to certain thematic aspects.
