C’est le terrain qui commande!
Thomas Bierschenk represents ethnology “down to earth”. He follows the social realities of the field without falling for naive empiricism or the romantic idealisation of local voices, and points that ethnology does not have to draw on essentialisms to make other people’s logic of action comprehensible.
Among his topics under study on the basis of long-term experience in research are state and statehood, development, local forms of power or strategically operating Fulbe groups – especially in West African Benin, but as well in the Sultanate of Oman. Time and again his focus concentrated on the incomplete and hybrid, on the overlapping and contradictory, only to find in these the sources of social dynamics, innovation and change.
In the present volume his colleagues and students capture his approach and honour Thomas Bierschenk and his work with their contributions on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
