Africa is popularly considered as a continent of animals. Whether on safaris, in fables or in zoos: everywhere spaces were imagined and constructed as African spaces. The surveying and mapping of Africa on the basis of its animals was a global phenomenon. Travels, colonialism and international trade disseminated narratives africanized animals all over the world and contributed to their popularity. These images continue to shape the external as well as the internal perception of the continent and the dealing with its animals.

The present volume questions the relation of African spaces and African animals drawing on current research on the history of the 19th and 20th century. For this purpose it combines approaches of global and colonial history, literary studies and cultural anthropology with concepts of the field of Human-Animal Studies. It demonstrates how African animal spaces are imagined and constructed in Africa as well as on a transcontinental level.
