In diesem Sammelband werden Vorträge publiziert, die von Wissenschaftlern verschiedener Nationen (vor allem aus Indien, Pakistan, Deutschland, USA, zentralasiatischen Republiken) während des internationalen und interdisziplinären Symposiums Karakorum – Hindukush – Himalaya. Dynamics of Change gehalten wurden, das 1995 in Islamabad/Pakistan stattfand. Das Symposium wurde von der Koordination des DFG-Schwerpunktprogramms Kulturraum Karakorum (1989–1998) veranstaltet. Im Zentrum der Beiträge stehen die sich verändernden Beziehungen zwischen Mensch, Kultur und Umwelt in den Hochgebirgsräumen von Karakorum, Pamir, Hindukusch und Himalaya, vor allem unter aktueller Perspektive. Die Beiträge von Umwelt-, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaftlern beziehen sich überwiegend auf Pakistan, Indien, Nepal, China und Tadschikistan.
